How about a spring-clean diet?

by | Mar 18, 2024 | Later life, Wellness

I am sure you would agree with me, we are what we eat! Obesity is not a good thing and it is so easy to get overweight, of course, leads to complications, diabetes for instance, it puts a strain on your heart, excess weight damages your joints…and much more.

Over 35 years ago I trained in nutrition and it works alongside my coaching as I often need to remind my clients that some of the issues they come to me with, can be helped by a modification or a real change in the food they eat, this is especially relevant to people with poor mental health. Getting to the correct weight increases our well-being, mind body and spirit…

I had to remind myself of this recently. and it may help you, for instance…

  • Are you still coughing and fighting off a cold and a drippy nose?
  • Are you still bunged up and sick and tired of feeling underpar?

And oh, how we need the sun…. and then it’s the hay fever season!

Well, I was suffering too…. Over the winter months, I have had recurring lung congestion, which made me very tired, so I took myself in hand and did some fresh research. New information comes from the scientific community all the time and I read it …yes, I really do!

Anyway, I traced my issues to an overproduction of mucus, and postnasal drip, causing congestion in the lungs. So, my research guided me to an anti-mucus diet….

I don’t do diets…but I have a food regime, that sounds better doesn’t it, this one will kick start a spring clean diet whether you have a phlegm issue or not.

This regime is simple, but for some people, it would seem impossible, but if we want to get well as we age, simple is best. I am here to guide you…so yes you can!

After four days on this regime, my lungs started to clear, the post-nasal drip disappeared and after a week I had not only lost a bit of winter flab, but I could feel my energy return.

My sleeping, which had been disturbed every time I laid down, needing pillows to prop me up, returned to normal, a good eight hours, apart from a trip to the bathroom!

The regime is easy so it can be followed by anyone with similar issues or no issues at all. If you want to feel what optimum health feels like, lose a little weight, and get ready for a busy summer, then try it for a few days, maybe modified a little but the main principles work.

The Scary stuff: No meat, fish, dairy or soy, eggs cereals, bread, pasta, or grains. This is a typical day for me…..

Breakfast: lightly cooked pear or apple, sultanas, chopped almonds, pumpkin and ground flax seeds – no need for anything else the juice is enough to make it lovely, sweet and palatable. Lunch and dinner: vegetables of any kind, and a small amount of cooked beans, or nuts for protein. Snacks if needed, fresh or dried fruit like apricots or very ripe bananas, peaches etc. and nuts.

If you find this fascinating, I can send you a link to the list of foods that create or cure the overproduction of the dreaded phlegm. It has worked for me, and I tested it out; one day I introduced a meal of carbohydrates, quinoa which I have often, and the congestion returned and I had a really bad night. So the next day back on the regime and it all cleared up again.

This will also sort out gut problems, and your digestion and elimination get a big clear out. I do take some specific supplements, I can send you all the information if you ask.

This is not a regime for life but guidance for a clean-up once in a while, and one I will happily go back to if my congestion returns, it is a regime that I will modify and use as my base as it makes me feel so good.

Sometimes we need a kick start and you know this is what I can help you with. Doing all we can to stay well into our later life is as important as being happy because wellness is happiness.

Who wants to be old and ill and spend our best years sick and tired…not me obviously!
